How to Set Up a Balance Path at Home

A balance path is one of the easiest ways to get children moving indoors. Here’s how to set one up in minutes, make it more challenging over time and keep playtime safe.

You don’t need a garden or a big playroom to get children moving. A clear stretch of floor and a few stepping stones are enough to create a balance path — a simple course children walk, step and hop along. It’s quick to set up, easy to change and a great way to burn energy on a rainy afternoon.

What you’ll need

How to set up your balance path

  1. Clear the spaceMove furniture with sharp corners out of the way and check the floor is dry and free of toys or small objects.
  2. Start with a straight linePlace the stones in a line, a little closer together than your child’s normal step. Beginners can hold a grown-up’s hand for the first few tries.
  3. Add curves and turnsOnce the straight line feels easy, arrange the stones into a gentle curve, a zigzag or a circle so your child has to think about where each foot goes.
  4. Mix up the heightsIf your set includes different sizes, alternate low and higher stones to add a step up and a step down.
  5. Link in a balance beamConnect two groups of stones with a low beam section to create a longer route with a mix of stepping and walking.

Ways to make it more fun

  • Floor is lava: the stones are the only safe places to stand.
  • Different moves: walk forwards, sideways, then slowly backwards.
  • Balance challenge: carry a soft toy or bean bag without dropping it.
  • Design your own: let your child choose the layout for the next round.

Keeping it safe

Always supervise young children during active play, and use stepping stones on a flat, non-slippery surface with enough clear space around the path. Check the manufacturer’s age guidance on the packaging, and increase the challenge gradually as your child’s confidence grows.
